Charlotte, N.C.—A symposium to explore community water fluoridation and other fluoride models is set here for March 21 at the jointly held 43rd Annual Meeting & Exhibition of the American Association for Dental Research and the 38th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research.

Water Fluoridation: Safety, Effectiveness & Value in Oral Health Care will review evidence of safety and effectiveness, identify research gaps and consider implications for optimizing fluoride use in public health and clinical practice.

Presenters and the topics they plan to address include:

• Dr. E. Angeles Martinez-Mier, Indiana University Preventive & Community Dentistry—Effectiveness of Fluorides: Findings of Evidence-Based Reviews;

• Dr. Jay Kumar, assistant director, Bureau of Dental Health, New York—The Health Assessment of Fluoride in Drinking Water: Conclusions from the National Research Council and Subsequent Scientific Assessments by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency;

• Dr. Barbara Gooch, associate director for science, Division of Oral Health, National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, Centers for Disease Control—Community Water Fluoridation: Translating Evidence into Public Health Practice;

• Dr. Gary Slade, John W. Stamm Distinguished Professor of Dentistry, department of ecology, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill—Gaps in Scientific Knowledge Regarding Water Fluoridation and Other Fluoride Modalities.

Dr. Stephen H. Abrams, who practices at Cliffcrest Dental Office in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, is chair of the symposium.
